NAO British Championships 2017

On Friday 21st April accordionists from all over the UK and Ireland gathered for this years (2017) NAO UK Accordion Competition weekend. The Britannia Adelphi Hotel which sits in the heart of Liverpool was the venue for this annual Championship, an event that also included the CIA & CMA National trophy qualifications.

Friday nights events were all based around international qualification with those players deemed up to a qualifying standard being invited to the 67th CMA competition at Onet-le-Château, France and subsequently Inver Shand, Alicia Carney, Annalize Bodell, Micheal Leavey, Clelland Shand, Madison Doherty, Ciara Masterson, Roseanna Bodell and the Royal Meath Accordion Ensemble will all now be able to enter in October. In addition Alexander Bodell qualified for the CIA Entertainment Solo to be held in Osimo, Italy in September. With all the international business tied up, kids were sent off to bed for an early night for a fresh start to the following days full programme of competitions and the mums and dads given time for a relaxing drink before heading the same way.

The Judges

The judges (pictured right) Alexander Bodell, Larysa Bodell, Karolyn Broadhead, Alistair Gillespie, Gerry Kelly, Graham Laurie & Douglas Ward were to be in for a busy weekend with the main UK competition sections being straight after breakfast. Three function rooms were in continuous use throughout the day for judging and those wishing to see the action were often given the dilemma of choosing between which classes to watch. One of the benefits of this venue is the copious number of public rooms available to practise in and in wandering around the hotel you could hear accordionists everywhere warming up and getting ready for their competitions.

Brian Laurie Paisley Academy Orchestra

There were a number of highlights during the day with both Junior and Senior Recital championships being decided. Amongst the more spectacular performances were the bands of which one drew acclaim for everyone. A James Bond medley performed by The Brian Laurie Paisley Academy Orchestra highlighted how many talented young musicians were attending the festival. It is important that our instrument is seen to be ‘current’ and ‘relevant’ to up and coming young musicians and their performance was a perfect example of this.

Scotland Accordions were in attendance as trade stand support and were very busy throughout. It was not unusual to see them answering questions and letting the kids try out instruments well into the evening. As well as the new instruments on display, accessories and midi kits also attracted a lot of interest.

Saturday night was time to let all the nerves and tension of the weekend go and a Grand Celidh with Highland Fling (which was held in the main hall) assisted with this. The music and dancing was fabulous with the kids and adults having a great time. Many squeals of joy could be heard as they swung each other round and you had to wonder how there were no collisions. Seeing them letting their hair down and having a great time makes one realise how important a contrast the Celidh gives to all the hard work in the competitions. Half time brought a well earned break. Alexander Bodell filled in for a while and one of the Irish bands, Slane Traditional Grupai Cheoil then got up and performed, ending their spot singing Caledonia accompanied by guitar with the audience joining in on the chorus and showing their appreciation by giving slightly biased, very loud and good humoured applause. Funds are important to an organisation such as this and thanks should go to all involved in helping with the interval raffle (and selling entry bands). Once all this was completed it was time to get back down to the serious business of dancing again. All too soon the next days competitions beckoned and so the evening wrapped up.

The organisers were kind starting at 10 am on Sunday allowing everyone to have at least a little lay in, however it didn’t take long to get back to the main events at hand. Polka, Musette, Scottish and Frossini sections ensued, time flew and the end soon approached. The last event was the entertainment section. The Irish group had performed their entry earlier due to flight commitments however the grand finale was given by Elaine Beecham’s group. The entry had everything, accordions, dancing & singing and the audience loved it!

Then came the serious matter of the results (listed below) and presentation of the awards, a ceremony that was to take quite a time with well over a hundred trophies to be given. The adulation given to all the winners was brilliant! A special mention must be given to all those that travelled from Ireland. Due to competition rules they were not allowed to win as they were not UK residents however special Gold, Silver and Bronze awards were presented to them. Their attendance was deeply appreciated by all and the atmosphere they brought was a treat to behold. All competitors should be highly praised, the hours of practise often come at great sacrifice and to see this dedication in our youngsters is a pure treat!
