Musician Dr Rene Mairis, originally from Cornwall (The Lizard) has been an accordion enthusiast for many years having fallen in love with the instrument during a holiday in Bulgaria. Whilst she plays music from many different accordion styles, Bulgarian folk music is consequently one of her passions! Now retired from lecturing in music (she is also a a flautist) with the Open University she has more time to enjoy the accordion, music in general and travelling.
Rene composes and arranges in many genres and has a large catalogue of solos, duets, trios and pieces for accordion orchestra. These will be available soon via the AccordionCentral Shop. The Shanghai Express (please see the mp3 file above) is her first opus for accordion orchestra and was written for the orchestra which she conducts every July at the St Audries festival. The pictures (above and right) were taken at St Audries last year while the orchestra was performing Shanghai Express. The piece has also since been used by Ian Watson for his Bellows & Waves teaching festival.
She currently lives on the Isle of Wight and in addition to teaching, writing and her other hobbies Rene directs the Wight Accordion Group (WAGs). The group is nine strong with eight accordions and a bass guitar and is going from strength to strength with plenty of gigs lined up, all for charity.
